2022 - Issue 03

Showcasing artists and works that caught my attention.
Visually attention grabbing, yet falling firmly into the “my kid could do that” criticism category, is Rachel Jones (@jo.nesr) solo show SMIIILLLLEEEE. The works are teeth (Image 1) but to me they mostly look like scratch canvas used to sharpen and colour-test pastels (Image 2). The surprise in the last room is equally polarising. What do you think? At Thaddaeus Ropac (@ThaddaeusRopac) until 05 Feb
Image 3 = Brushes by William Wright (@WilliamWrightPainter) calls attention to the humble beauty of utilitarian artist tools. What kinds of inspiring works do you think these might one day create? At Lyndsey Ingram (@Lyndsey_Ingram) until 25 Feb
Image 4 = The simple but effective coloured paper ‘flower beds’ by Zhuang Hong-Yi (@ZhuangHongYiArt) need to be seen in person, and there are plenty on display at the Refractions of Matter group show at House of Fine Art (@TheHouseofFineArt) until 26 Jan
Images 5-6 = I’d never heard of Leigh Bowery, but the juxtaposition of crazy clubbing outfits displayed in a Grade II listed chapel was too good to pass up. A documentary in the alcove helps explain the massive turnout to this show. At Fitzrovia Chapel (@FitzroviaChapel) until 06 Feb. Free - booking essential
Images 7-8 = The mixed-media works in Monster by Suchitra Mattai (@suchitramattaiart) combine unexpected elements to address fear and the unknown. I’m not entirely sure what most of it means, but found many of the works beautiful, and certainly thought-provoking. At Unit London @UnitLondon until 12 Feb
@LondonPaintClub began as an online outlet during the lockdowns. They just had their first IRL show (a 4-day pop-up exhibition) to spotlight some standout painting by Hannah Murgatroyd (@hannah_murgatroyd - Image 9, left), Thomas Cameron (@thomascameronart - Image 10) and Emerson Pullman (@emerson.artist - not pictured). You can still see all the works, and more, online at londonpaintclub.com until 24 Feb
