2022 - Issue 08
Showcasing artists and works that caught my attention.
Images 1-2 = One of the things that makes London loveable is that it’s not all Victorian mews and manicured patches of green. There’s grit and decay scattered throughout the city, reminding you of old industries and new possibilities. Jock McFadyen RA has a knack for capturing the beauty in the unloved and overlooked.
‘Tourist without a Guidebook’ at Royal Academy of Arts (@royalacademyarts) (FREE) until 10 Apr
〰
Images 3-5 = As you navigate the maze of vintage wallpapered walls, cartoon-style papier-mâché hands appear through portholes, holding exquisitely crafted abstract paper collage. What does it all mean, this assault of colour and contrasting patterns? And what of the title?
This installation by a duo called Assume Vivid Astro Focus or AVAF (@assumevividastrofocus) is referencing the secret colours and Polari code words used when homosexuality was illegal in the UK.
‘Bona to Vada Your Dolly Bold Eek’ at Lamb London (@Lamb_Gallery) until 01 Apr

For a much more frank and sometimes explicit exhibit about the male-on-male gaze, visit the ‘Figure and Ground’ group show.
The sandblasted aluminium works by Radek Husak (@lord_radek) and oils by Gavin Maughfling (@gavinmaughfling) (Image 6) both examine the similarities between subtle and not so subtle homosexual encounters despite the extreme difference of materiality in their works.
James Robert Morrison (@james_robert_morrison) (not pictured) cleverly transplants his fantasies through Rizla papers and string, and KV Duong (@kvduongart) (Image 7) explores both his heritage and his body in two very different sets of work.
But if your taste is a more abstract approach, head upstairs for the colourful prints of Bill Pryde (@BillPryde) in ‘Ecce Homo’ (Image 8). Pop art florals and landscapes, and the occasional nude, are sure to brighten up your day.
Both at Bermondsey Project Space (@BProjectSpace) until 26 Feb
