2022 - Issue 15
Showcasing artists and works that caught my attention.
Image 1 = Despite my pet peeve with the art worlds’ overuse of “liminal” I loved these rough and ragged mixed-media works by Aida Mahmudova (@aidasaya) from Azerbaijan. Deeply textured landscapes surround post-apocalyptic scale models, while Composition Boxes (Image 2) offer up what future archaeologists might find.
‘Liminality’ at Gazelli Art House (@GazelliArtHouse) until 14 May
〰
Images 3-4 = Barbara Walker (@b.cogle) has utilised an idea so simple I’m shocked it hasn’t been done before. It’s incredibly powerful and needs to be seen to be appreciated, much like the black people in her drawings. Old Masters painted them into the background, but Walker has flipped the focus in a thoroughly modern way by ghosting everyone and everything else around them.
Image 5 = Pop downstairs for minimalist textured ‘paintstik’ works by Richard Serra complimented by abstract Eduardo Chillida etchings.
‘Vanishing Point’ and ‘The Articulation of Space’ at Cristea Roberts (@CristeaRoberts) until 23 Apr
〰
Images 6-7 = If you love a good “art vs craft” debate then don’t miss these Romano Giampierò (@Romano_Giampiero) mirrors. The fine detail and exquisite finish of his thoroughly modern antiques is exceeded only by the creative selfies you’ll be sure to take.
‘Inside You’ at Mucciaccia Gallery (@MucciacciaGallery) until 20 May
〰
Images 8-9 = David Wightman (@DavidWightmanPainter) landscapes are essentially colour and depth perception studies, with a twist. Painted wallpaper is collaged to create the scene, providing textures that really makes them pop.
‘Ariel’ at Groove Square Galleries (@GroveSquareGalleriesOfficial) until 14 May
〰
Image 10 = Come on adults, admit it: You still want to climb on the playground. You can! This teenager-sized apparatus that looks like the Death Star, from the 2021 British Pavilion in Venice, is now on display in London.
‘The Garden of Privatised Delights’ at Building Centre (@thebuildingcentre) until 15 Oct
