I’m not familiar with the writings of British critic, writer and curator Guy Brett (1942-2021) but another way to understand a voice in the art world is through the art they liked enough to acquire. This selection of works from his private collection is specifically focussed on Latin American art. It’s a solid show but I would have liked to see a wider range of his taste. Over half the works are from three artists, although it was a treat to see so many of Lygia Clark’s playful abstracts, and a joy to laugh at Cildo Meireles’ humorous currency.

I’m utterly fascinated by these images, and also slightly disturbed. Some of these big, bold, eye-catching works look like night-vision footage the DEA took of drug smugglers off the coast of Miami. Others could be stylised scenes from a superhero video game. There’s something very boys-cult about these masked figures waving machetes and guns, but the hypersaturated colours and total lack of context makes it hard for me to decide if I should be truly scared or simply amused. I had the same reaction when I saw Kids back in the 90s and that seems to be the thing with Harmony Korine. He does his own thing, often contentious and often in unflinching ways, but one thing’s undeniable: he always makes it look so effing cool.
