Norton Museum of Art

West Palm Beach’s @NortonMuseumOfArt is the largest museum in Florida, and you probably haven’t heard of it. But like many of the better known names in the museum space, its founder was an early 20th century industrialist with an impressive personal collection that formed the basis of the archives.

Founded in 1941, it now has a collection of over 8,200 works. Walking through the museum’s many galleries is like walking through an art history book come to life.

Even if you don’t know your Manet from your Monet you still know the names: Cézanne… Hopper… Matisse… O’Keeffe… Picasso… Pollack… Rubens… And the greatest hits continues through to modern day contemporary: Bourgeois... Eliasson… Flavin… Gormley… Saville…

There’s also a Chinese antiquities wing and an Afterschool Arts program that features works made by a community of Palm Beach County kids. Currently some clever and colourful Kites!

It’s all housed in one of the least flashy post-2000 Foster + Partners buildings I’ve come across. Then again, this is West Palm Beach: understated exterior elegance. The real money’s in the interior. And the sculpture garden!
