NSU Art Museum
As the only contemporary art museum along the 70-mile stretch of sand between Miami and Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale’s@NSUArtMuseumhas a challenging remit. With a prevalence of artists of LatinX, Female, African or Black heritage and “exhibitions exploring issues that resonate with the South Florida community” there’s always a little something for everyone.
It currently has 13 (THIRTEEN!) small shows on display, representing a variety of artists and media.
I’d previously showcased 3 painters. Here’s a selection of other works that caught my attention.
Image 1 = The permanent and very eye-catching “paint-drip” mural on the exterior of the building by@jenstark
Image 2 = Found object#marionettesand a site-specific painting of Parisian café society by#PabloCano
Image 3 = Pure Lard#3by@VanessaLGermanwho uses “artmaking as an act of restorative justice”
Image 4 = Everything is Fine Here by#RayAzcuyis made out of Ken dolls wrapped in strips of South Florida maps and letters from the artist’s family
Image 5 = There’s nothing subtle about this work by@RubenTorresLlorca— but what do you think it means?
Images 6-8 = The Sartorial Anarchy series of self portraits by@IkeUdeare like nothing I’ve seen before. Instantly engaging and full of references worth researching, I especially loved the meticulous detail in the accompanying title cards.
Images 9-10 = If early 20th century art is more your style, visit the museum’s wing of works by#WilliamGlackens(1870 - 1938) including a room decorated like a Victorian-era parlour, compete with fake fireplace. It made me feel like I was back home in London.
And there’s more. A LOT more, including#photography, an immersive AR installation, site specific#mixedmediaworks and a pretty good permanent collection. I make sure to visit every time I’m in town, and encourage you to go too.
