There are hundreds of outdoor sculptures located all around London, but sometimes it’s nice to focus on a select few based around a specific theme. Lucky for Londoners, it seems like a new art trail arrives every month. From annual stalwarts like KCAW and Frieze to new kids, er, dogs on the block Paws on the Wharf, there’s something for everyone.

So if you wanna get out for some fresh air and art in 2024 bookmark this page and check back often. It will be regularly updated as new trails are announced and recurring favourites are confirmed. With helpful links to maps and apps, it’s a one-stop shop for all your Outdoor Sculpture Trail needs.

Fleet Street Quarter Penguins

When: 14 November - early January

Where: Between Fleet Street and Chancery Lane

Details are still scarce, but the rumours are true: a Penguin art trail is coming to London! The Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Wild In Art will be placing a dozen winter themed penguins in the ”Fleet Street Quarter”. Each will have QR codes to link you to additional facts and stories narrated by comedian and children's author Olaf Falafel.

Permanent Fixtures

Canary Wharf - Art on the Estate

Where: Canary Wharf, London E14

If you haven’t been to Canary Wharf then you’ll be forgiven for not knowing that they have an extensive, and growing, collection of outdoor art. There are currently over 100 works spread across the estate, clustered into 5 easy to digest sections. With super fast access via the Jubilee and Elizabeth Line and a growing selection of shops, cafes and restaurants, you’ve got no excuse not to plan a visit.

Chelsea Barracks Estate

Where: Chelsea Barracks — Enter on foot from Pimlico Road or Chelsea Bridge Road, SW1W 8RF

The current display of rotating works includes some amazing Dale Chihuly glass sculptures and yes, it’s free for you to wander around the estate from 9am - 9pm while you’re also ogling how the other half live. Just how exclusive is this property built on the site of the former Chelsea Barracks? Last I checked £60 Million for the 14,704 SqFt, 7-story townhomes with an underground pool, 2-car garage, cinema and living quarters for your staff. If you go be sure to check out the permanent “tree” by Conrad Shawcross, located by the entrance on Pimlico Road.

Sculpture in the City

When: 24 July until Spring 2025

Where: City of London, between Liverpool Street, Fenchurch Street and Aldgate stations

Sculpture in the City is a compact trail that makes clever use of what little space is left between the City of London skyscrapers that keeping appearing like weeds, hiding the once prominent Gherkin from almost every skyline view except the East. You could easily see all of the installations on your lunch hour, if you were in a rush.

The latest edition — lucky number 13! — includes 17 artworks by 15 artists: Arturo Herrera, Clare Burnett, Daniel Silver, Elisa Artesero, Hilary Jack, Ida Ekblad, Jesse Pollock, Julian Opie, Maya Rose Edwards, Oliver Bragg, Richard Mackness, Samuel Ross, Seph Li, Vanessa da Silva and Victor Lim Seaward.

The Line

Where: Between Stratford and North Greenwich

Technically this is the only actual ‘trail’ on the list, since it’s designed to be enjoyed in a linear fashion. It was London’s first permanently dedicated public art walk and it includes some incredibly large outdoor works, showing how artists explore big ideas through monumental installations. Many works are permanent, but the overall selection receives annual updates and extensions.

Walking the full route takes a little over half a day and gives you an excuse to ride the IFS Cloud Cable Car. Use the audio guides and go at your own pace, or join one of the free Thursday Wellbeing Walks or Saturday Guided Walks. If you haven’t yet walked The Line… what are you waiting for?

A Wild Life for Wildlife

Where: Scattered across Kensington & Chelsea

There are 3 absolutes about London: It will always be expensive. It will always be changing. There will always be a Gillie & Marc sculpture somewhere.

This very popular series of endangered animals that was recently located by Tower Bridge has now relocated into Kensington & Chelsea as part of their annual summer sculpture trail. See if you a find all eleven! “Each sculpture is accompanied by QR codes that transport viewers to important information about the animals' lives, needs, and threats, providing a deeper understanding of the urgent need for their conservation.”

Battersea Power Station Light Festival

When: 25 Jan - 25 Feb

Where: Battersea Power Station — Battersea

It’s back! And it promises to be brighter and more interactive than last year’s outing, even if it’s got one less work of art. Happening both inside and outside the power station, there will be seven  installations, some enhanced with soundscapes and motion sensitive interactive elements. Lit daily from 8am – 11pm.

Check the website for additional attractions such as family-friendly workshops, music and live weeknight performances on the ‘Light Piano 2.0’ installation.

Big Fun Art Adventure

When: 17 August - 13 October

Where: North London, exact locations TBC

North London is about to be infested by sixty owls — yes 60! — designed and decorated by artists, schools and community groups. This fun and family-friendly art trail will be on display for eight weeks and provide a great opportunity for kids of all ages to explore some iconic spots and local hidden gems. Whoo-whoo is organising this? The North London Hospice and Wild in Art, that’s who!

Frieze Sculptures

When: 18 Sep to 27 Oct

Where: Regent’s Park

Yes, it’s back! The best value-for-money option at Frieze is always the outdoor sculpture park, because it’s FREE! The works this year aren’t as crazy or weird (or, dare I say it, fun?) as in some previous years, but there’s a lot of experimental things happening including sound and performances, as well as one sculpture that most people might miss since it’s actually been painted on the grass. Brilliant!

Be sure to check the Performances section on the website to confirm days and times for when some of the sculptures come alive!

Heritage Trail

When: 15 June to 01 September

Where: Between Victoria Station & Temple Station

To help celebrate the National Gallery’s 200th Birthday, a new “Heritage Trail” of artist painted London-themed sculptures has arrived. With works that include a Top Hat, Black Taxi, Rain Boots and Teacup hunting down this trail feels a bit like picking your favourite Monopoly figure, except they’re mostly all pretty large sized works that won’t get lost between the sofa cushions! However, please note that this isn’t so much a “trail” is it is a city-wide scavenger hunt. The 11 items are located near various landmarks loosely scattered between Victoria Station and Somerset House. To entice you to go find them all, there’s a competition with prizes including Afternoon Tea for a family for four. Good luck!

Kensington + Chelsea Art Trail

When: 15 June to 31 August

Where: Around Kensington + Chelsea

It’s here! This year’s theme is ‘Changing Landscapes’ and the 14 artists “were invited to consider the social, geographical as well as digital landscapes, the natural habitats and the human response to the world through the use of AI”. What does that mean? I have no idea… so you’ll just have to visit each one to find out!

Note: this “trail” is really just a random selection of high profile locations including Duke of York Square, Sloane Street, Earl’s Court and High Street Kensington. Most people won’t be able to walk to see everything in an hour, or even half a day, as they’re all spaced pretty far apart. Planning in advance is required.

The Little Egg Hunt

Where: Across Chelsea


Just in time for the long Easter weekend, a dozen decorated eggs have been hidden throughout Chelsea. It’s a nice little warm up for next year’s main event which will see 200 — yes, TWO HUNDRED! —exquisite creations take London by storm. Brought to you by Elephant Family, a registered charity that works to protect Asia’s wildlife.


London Mural Festival

Where: TBC - but many, many locations!

London Mural Festival returns to the capital’s streets this September with over 100 murals to explore, from some of the world's best street artists. Themed around ‘connection’, the festival will bring together thousands of artists, communities, and visitors to celebrate London’s diverse people and places. There will be a series of live events and workshops, too! Produced by @globalstreetart

NOTE: Many of the murals will probably remain in place, possibly for years!

Paws on the Wharf

When: 25 Mar to 17 May

Where: Canary Wharf

25 larger-than-life guide dog sculptures have been thoughtfully clustered in 5 easy to find locations, though not all the dogs are easy to find. I simply couldn’t sniff out the four indoor woofers, but that didn’t stop my enjoyment. The trail is highly accessible and many of the dogs incorporate tactile elements or Braille, and some of the visual designs are just so fantastic. Five of the contributing artists have lived experience of sight loss, and all the works will be auctioned at a charity event on 05 June at Saatchi Gallery.

Brought to you by Guide Dogs and Wild in Art, supported by Citi and hosted by Canary Wharf Group, Paws on the Wharf aims to raise awareness and vital funds to help people with sight loss live more active and independent lives.

The Sky is Moving Sideways

Where: Stephens House & Gardens — 17 East End Road, Finchley, N3 3QE

Now here’s something different! Set within a 10 acre green oasis in suburban North London, the sculptures on this temporary trail are hidden amongst the trees, ponds, wooded areas and leafy arboretum that used to be the backyard of ‘Inky’ Stephens. It’s a thrill to be able to wander off the official pathways, and looking for these sculptures sometimes felt like a hunt for hidden treasure. Hint: look up!

Free — and less than a 10 walk from Finchley Central Tube station (Northern Line)

Waddle of Worcester

When: 22 July to 15 September

Where: Worcester (~2.25 hrs from Paddington by train)

See Worcester transformed into a free, fun art space as a waddle of forty big, brrr-illiant yellow-eyed penguins go on display for eight weeks alongside forty chicks designed by local schools and community groups. At the end, each big penguin will be auctioned to raise funds for St Richard’s Hospice and each chick returns to its forever home with schools and community groups.

I know this one isn’t in London, but… PENGUINS! 🐧

Winter Lights

When: 17 - 27 Jan (Daily 5 - 10 pm)

Where: Canary Wharf


The eighth edition of this incredibly popular trail sees 13 temporary installations join the existing collection of six permanent light artworks. Some, like numbers 2, 5, 7 and 8 have motion and sound and are not to be missed! This limited run event is hugely popular so be sure to go early, bundle up and bring along some snacks, because the queues for hot drinks can be quite long on chilly winter evenings and even though No. 3 looks like a giant bonfire, you wont get warm standing in front of it.


Yayoi Kusama’s Pumpkin

When: 09 July to 03 November

Where: The Round Pond, Kensington Gardens

It’s big. It’s yellow. It’s got polka dots! Yayoi’s largest ever pumpkin — 6 metres tall! — has landed next to the Round Pond in Kensington Gardens and will be posing for selfies all summer long. While a single work technically doesn’t qualify as an ‘art trail’ this is Kusama, who has become one of the most popular modern artists thanks to her insanely Instagrammable art. So I suspect a lot of people will be looking for this, but thanks to its size it’s pretty hard to miss. You won’t want to miss it!
